ART EDUCATION
The bachelor's degree in Art Education is designed
to prepare our future art teachers. Students in this concentration must
comply with the certification requirements of the Department of Education
for working as a teacher in Puerto Rico, among which is passing a certificate
examination. The certificate authorizes its holder to work as a Visual
Arts teacher at the elementary or secondary level.
Students of the Escuela de Artes Plásticas
may take some Art Education courses at eh Universidad del Sagrado Corazon,
due to an agreement between both institutions. Such agreement allows the
student to benefit of the curricular offerings of each university.
The bachelor's degree in Art with an Art Education
concentration is designed to provide the student with knowledge and skills
in the field of education. On finishing the course of study students will:

Be able to work as teachers using methodology and evaluation
techniques.

Have an awareness of art in society and its usefulness in education.

Have knowledge of the philosophical, sociological, and psychological
principles of education.

Be able to develop the reading and writing skills of their
students using pedagogical and art strategies.

Be prepared to continue graduate studies in this specialty.

Have a critical, analytical and constructive perspective with
regard to his or her own educational practice and the social
responsibility it entails.

Use quantitative and qualitative methods in classroom.
-
Be certified as Teacher of the education system of Puerto Rico.

Be able to use artistic techniques as learning tools.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
REQUIREMENTS
ED-101- PRINCIPLES OF EDUCATION*
3 credits
(EDU 201)
Covers concept and purpose of education, the teacher’s and student’s
role, and the historical of education up to current systems. The Puerto
Rican educational trajectory is studied. The philosophical and sociological
aspects of education are emphasized.
ED- 203-DIAGNOSIS AND CORRECTION OF DEFICIENCIES IN READING AND WRITING*
3 credits
(EDU 315 THE ART OF LANGUAGE IN THE SCHOOL PROGRAM)
Theoretical foundations, goals and academic content of the Art of Language
in the School program (K-12). The course is based on strategies and techniques
for the teaching and evaluation of communication processes in the mother
tongue.
ED-204- EDUCATION FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF TALENT*
3 credits
(EDU 306 NATURE AND NEED OF EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN)
An introductory course covering the nature, need, educational interventions
and options for the education of exceptional school population. A global
vision of diagnose and evaluation of each exceptional feature. It includes
the study of the laws LP 101-476 (IDEA law) and Law number 51 of Integral
Services offered by public and private agencies to help exceptional children.
ED 104 COMPUTER FUNDAMENTALS AND ITS APPLICATIONS TO EDUCATION*
3 credits
(INF 104)
This course presents the historical development of the principles and
foundations supporting the use of computers in the educational, faculty
and administrative areas. It provides knowledge and practical experience
in the use of different hardware and software. It discusses essential
criteria in evaluating digital educational programs.
ED-300 EVALUATION OF LEARNING*
3 credits
(EDU 300)
It provides different evaluation techniques. Exploration ranging from
traditional techniques for quantifying results, to non-traditional ones,
where qualitative evaluations are produced. Students will learn to use
journals and portfolios as evaluation methods of both artistic and academic
works.

EG 207 PERFORMING ARTS
3 credits
Its purpose is to relate the student to the integration of plastic arts
to theater and music. Different art forms will be studied (opera, ballet,
zarzuela, etc.) and their theoretical and historical foundations.
ED-301/302- THEORY AND METHODOLOGY OF ART TEACHING 2 semesters
6 credits
Study of theories of instruction as applied to planning and development
of learning activities in art education. Systematic planning of teaching
at an elementary level. It includes the analysis, planning and systematic
evaluation of art classes at the secondary level.
ED-400- TEACHING PRACTICUM
6 credits
The Teaching Practicum course is designed to expose the student to pedagogical
experiences in the classroom, with students in the Puerto Rican educational
system. It is a teachers training course, where the student is under the
tutelage of an experienced and qualified teacher and under the supervision
of the course teacher.
ELECTIVES
The Department of Education requires EG-211 History of the United
States, and the course is considered a direct
elective for the Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Education.
ED-102 HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
3 credits
Study of the development of the human being from conception to maturity.
The course emphasizes the physical, psychological, emotional and social
needs at each stage of human development, especially in regard to student
populations comprised of children and adolescents.
ED-103 THEORIES OF LEARNING
3 credits
Study of the various theories of teaching/learning and cognitive processes
related to memory, intelligence, thought and language.
EED-206 LEARNING TO READ THROUGH THE ARTS
3 credits
The course is based on a program validated and sponsored by the National
Diffusion Network of the United States Department of Education. The principal
objective of the LRTA program is to improve reading skills through artistic
production. LRTA combines the various arts with reading and writing techniques,
emphasizing the development of a holistic philosophy of language.
