BASIC STUDIO COURSES

Basic studio courses provide all Escuela de Artes Plásticas students with basic skills in the arts. The 30 credits of this curricular component are structured to develop essential knowledge of drawing, painting, three-dimensional creation, digital creation and practice, and graphic arts. On completion, students will be able to:

  1. Develop an artistic concept and execute the concept in the medium of their choosing.
  2. Apply the concepts, approach, and materials that are particular to painting, digital practice, sculpture and graphic arts.
  3. Understand and use computer architecture and operating systems effectively.
  4. Solve composition problems using the principles of design.
  5. Draw skillfully

TFA- 101A BASIC OF PICTORIAL CREATION

Conceptualization and technical development of two-dimensional works based on the use of color and the principles of design.

TFA- 101B FOUNDATION OF GRAPHIC CREATION
2 credits
workshop: $15.00
Introduction to graphic creation and printing of originals. Through practical exercises the student develops a concept that he or she must later execute in a graphic medium.

TFA- 101C BASIC THREE-DIMENSIONAL CREATION L
2 credits

A course addressing the elements of three-dimensional design and composition. Students will explore the relationship between space and volume, form and texture; the exercises will introduce the student to the expressive, formal and structural character of the work.

TFA- 103- BASIC DRAWING
3 credits

Development of drawing skills through studio exercises and assigned projects. Introduction to the theory of composition. Drawing from objects and models with the progressive development of the effects of light and shadow, using basic drawing materials. Studies tonal values.

TFA-105- THEORY AND PRACTICE OF COLOR
3 credits

Study of the nature of color: the color spectrum and pigmentation. Discussion of chromatic theory; execution of exercises in which combinations, interactions and interdisciplinary applications of pigment.

TFA 106 PRINCIPLES OF SCULPTURE

General introduction to the different techniques and theories of sculpture, traditional as well as contemporary.Special importance is given to the historical relationship between technique and artistic movements.

TFA- 107 BASIC DIGITAL CREATION AND PRACTICE

Workshop: $40.00
Presents the computer as an instrument of creation, the digital medium as an art tool. The course initiates students in the concepts and the technical development of the work and digital design. Students will become familiar with Macintosh and Windows hardware and operating systems. Includes history of technology and history of digital art and design in Puerto Rico and the world.

TFA- 201- ANATOMICAL DRAWING

DDevelopment of the process of drawing the human figure, emphasizing the visualization and outlining of the form. Studies bone and muscle structures of the human body, hands, head, torso, and extremities. Emphasizes contour, volume, and proportion.

TFA- 202- ADVANCED DRAWING
3 credits

Study and execution of the concepts and processes of the medium, developing the techniques on different supports and in different formats. Exercises range from representational drawing to works in which personal expression is emphasized.

TFA- 203- BASIC RELIEF PRINTMAKING
3 credits
workshop: $15.00
Introduction to relief printmaking technique, using wood, linoleum and any other alternative material. Both the use of tradition and experimental tools will be encouraged. Includes the history of relief printmaking and the principal exponents of this technique.

TAF 205 BASIC DESIGN

Basic principles of design which are a part of a visual artist's training. Projects are developed that will explain concretely each of the principles. Emphasis on equilibrium of form and structural relationships within a work of art.

Continuation of the study of concepts, development and processes of drawing and composition. A variety of techniques and materials are used. Workshop exercises with models and other subjects.


TFA- 204- EXPERIMENTAL DRAWING

Workshop $15.00
Workshop exploring methods, techniques, styles and concepts pertaining to contemporary esthetics. Experimentation with a variety of materials and supports in which the student explores his or her personal concepts and style.
