The print is a two-dimensional form of artistic
expression, involving multiple reproduction. Printmaking includes traditional
as well as contemporary techniques such as Relief Printmaking, intaglio,
lithography, collograph, silk screen, photography and photographic derivatives.
The Graphic Arts Department, is committed to excellence in teaching and
with the substitution of toxic materials for methods harmless to people
and the environment. It encourages the creation of images whose design
and visual and technical versatility enrich the tradition of Puerto Rican
graphic arts.
The Bachelor's Degree in Art with a concentration
in Graphic Arts is designed to develop the student's knowledge and skill
in the field of graphics. On completing this course of study students will:

Be able to work with the principal techniques of the principal graphic media.

Have and continue to acquire knowledge of the concept and historic development of graphic arts.

Be able to analyze the concepts that inspire graphic art and the social and aesthetic conscience that informs it.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
REQUIREMENTS
TAG- 201- BASIC INTAGLIO
3 credits
Workshop: $15.00
Study of non-toxic intaglio, ferric chloride etching, acrylic hard and soft grounds, and aquatint. Different tools, materials and supports will be used, mixed media in etching and other techniques. Includes the study of the history of Intaglio and its principal exponents.
TAG- 202- INTERMEDIATE INTAGLIO

workshop: $15.00
Course on non-toxic intaglio that integrates photographic techniques using photopolymer film. Drawn, photographed, and digitalized images will be used. Students work in color with one or more plates, and with mixed media to create their works. Experimentation with formats and supports will be emphasized. Includes the study of contemporary graphic work.
TAG- 204- INTERMEDIATE RELIEF PRINTMAKING
3 credits
workshop: $15.00
Development of techniques learned during the basic relief printmaking course, emphasizing the use of color by using the plates as wholes or as a puzzle pieces. Includes the use of alternative materials, as well as the development of a proposal and formal language.
TAG- 205- BASIC SILK-SCREEN PRINTING
3 credits
workshop: $20.00
Study of stencil technique worked directly on the screen. Non-toxic printing method using transparent and opaque acrylic-based inks. Emphasis on the aesthetic proposal of each project.
TAG- 206- COLLOGRAPHY AND MONOTYPES
3 credits
workshop: $15.00
Collograph printing basically uses two graphic processes- intaglio and relief-on the same plate. Techniques include the preparation of the plate itself, whole and jigsaw plates, creation of textures, with or without tonal gradation, and the use of color. Monotypes will be worked with one or several plates using additive and reductive methods. Includes the study of history of both media and their principal exponents.
TAG- 301- BASIC LITHOGRAPHY

The development of the pictorial proposal with the use of a polyester or a traditional plate. Use of drawing, washes, texture transfer, needle scratching, and computer-generated images. Includes the study of traditional lithography and its principal exponents.
TAG- 302- INTERMEDIATE LITHOGRAPHY
3 credits
workshop: $20.00
The course integrates polyester plate lithography with mixed media; images are generated using the computer. Individual and experimental development of the image is emphasized, using different supports and format, with two or more plates. Includes the work of contemporary artists.
TAG- 303- GRAPHIC DESIGN
3 credits
workshop: $15.00
The course includes a theoretical and practical analysis of design applied to printing processes, incorporating the use of computers. Emphasizes the study of the alphabet and typography, including history, design, and applications. Studies the relationship between letters and images. Study of design for graphic media leading to the design of a book and a poster.
TAG- 400/401- SEMINAR IN GRAPHIC ARTS
EG 400/401 THESIS

Workshop: $25.00
The seminar is the final course in the Graphic Arts. During the year the students produce a body of work on a subject of their choosing using the most appropriate technique. Experimentation is encouraged with a view to obtaining full development of the image. An important part of the course is a thesis discussing the visuals arts. Course taken by candidates for graduation in the Graphic Arts concentration.

EAG 204 EXPERIMENTAL PRINTMAKING

For students who wish to study experimental printmaking more thoroughly. Emphasizes development of an individual proposal in which the image, support, and format reflect contemporary explorations and solutions.
EAG-210 - MANUAL PRINTING
3 credits
workshop: $20.00
Design and printing of books. Integrates knowledge of typographical design, direct printing, analyzing and editing text and binding leading to creating a hand-made book. The Casa del Libro is used as an external resource.
EAG 211 - PAPER-MAKING
3 credits
workshop: $20.00
Hand-made paper and its use as a support for works of art, providing artists with a versatile media with which to create two- or three-dimensional works, monumental installations or delicate small-format art.
EAG-212 - CALLIGRAPHY
3 credits
workshop: $15.00
Focuses on the historical development of letters from their origin until the present. The course also includes the relationship between calligraphy and typography. Students will learn to use several calligraphic sources and will experiment with the creative use of writing as a design element.
EAG 217 - INTERMEDIATE CALLIGRAPHY
3 credits
workshop: $15.00
Continuation of the previous course, EAG 212; further study of the creative
use of calligraphy in written documents and designs.
EAG-213 - PHOTO-SILK-SCREEN
3 credits
workshop: $25.00
Positives for photo-silk-screening will be prepared using the following
techniques: rubylith, India ink on acetate, transparencies produced in
photocopies, in computer and photographic reticule. Conceptual development
through technique will be emphasized.
EAG 302 - INTERMEDIATE PAPER-MAKING

workshop: $20.00
Continuation of EAG 211, emphasizing technical mastery and the development
of a personal language using the medium to produce works in melted paper,
relief, mixed media and installations.
EAG 314 BASIC PHOTOGRAPHY
3 credits
Workshop: $40.00
Introduction to basics of black and white photography and the development of photographic techniques. Includes theory and practice of the use and handling of photographic equipment. Students develop basic skills that may be used as a means of personal expression. Includes the history of the medium and its principal exponents.
EGA 316 INTERMEDIATE PHOTOGRAPHY
3 credits
Workshop: $40.00
The course further explores technical and aesthetic dimensions of photography. Special attention is given to different photographic techniques, with the camera and in the laboratory, other aspects of photographic chemistry, and control of techniques.
EAG- 380 INTERNSHIP
up to a maximum of 6 credits
Offers the student the opportunity to acquire work experience in his or
her concentration while studying. In addition, it allows the student to
meet professionals in the field and establish professional ties that may
lead to employment opportunities on graduation. To be eligible, students
should be in their third or fourth years of study with a GPA of 2.5 or
more. Each internship will be awarded up to a maximum of 6 academic credits.

An open course that allows for a variety of content, from seminars with
visiting artist, to study travel abroad.
EAG 207-LARGE FORMAT PRINTMAKING
3 credits

For students who wish to study large format printmaking more thoroughly. Emphasizes the development of an individual proposal, in which the image, support and format reflect contemporary explorations and solutions. Students will work with the concepts of single and multiple works. The use of computers and mixed media is encouraged.
