Painting is one of the principal means of expression of visual arts. The Painting Program ranges from traditional to experimental and interdisciplinary manifestations. The basic two-year drawing and design foundation courses for all concentrations are part of the Painting Department.
The Painting Department is committed to educating students in the mastery of the techniques and general principles of painting. Students are also trained in critical thinking and are provided with the technical and conceptual tools essential for developing their plastic individuality. On completing the course of study, students will be able to:

COURSE DESCRIPTION
REQUIREMENTS
TPN- 201- BASIC PAINTING WATER-BASED MEDIA
3 credits
workshop: $15.00
Introduction to pictorial technique using various water-based media, emphasizing
acrylics. Development of the skills pertaining to each medium and their
relationship with the supports used.
TPN-202- WATER-BASED MEDIA PAINTING II
3 credits
workshop: $15.00
Continuation of the study and practice of water-based media. Experimentation
with technical processes, the handling of color and harmony in composition.
Emphasis is given to technical excellence in the handling of the media
used during the year.
TPN- 203- PAINTING TECHNIQUES AND MATERIALS
3 credits
workshop: $15.00
Study of the different components used in painting, their characteristics
and variables. Introduction to the physical and chemical aspects of the
media and supports used in painting. Includes lectures on the techniques
of the following media: fresco, tempera, encaustic, water-color, oils,
acrylics and pyroxylin.
TPN- 204- PAINTING STUDIES
3 credits
workshop: $15.00
Study and investigation of the conditions preceding the creation of piece
of work. The student develops sketches and notes for the conceptual and
technical framework for the creation of painting. The course is intended
to develop speed and skill in the creation of an image.
TPN- 205- BASIC OIL PAINTING
3 credits
workshop: $20.00
Study and practice of the process of painting with oils. Experimentation
with the medium, the support and the physical, chemical and esthetic characteristics
of oils.
TPN- 206- INTERMEDIATE OIL PAINTING
3 credits
workshop: $20.00
The student will further study the use of some of the previously studied
alternatives in the medium. Through exercises the student develops more
advanced skills in the handling of pigments and the use of color to achieve
visual expression.
TPN- 303- EXPERIMENTAL PAINTING
3 credits

Study and workshop in the search for methods, techniques, styles and concepts
in keeping with contemporary esthetics. Experimentation with different
supports and materials to develop concepts and the student’s personal
visual vocabulary.
TPN- 400/401- PAINTING SEMINAR
(2 semesters) 6 credits
Workshop: $25.00
This course is for graduation candidates majoring in painting. Its fundamental
purpose is to encourage independent work, self-discipline and development
of a body of work that will evidence technical mastery, conceptual originality
and a personal style in the pictorial medium. It is a one-year course,
requiring the development and exploration of a subject chosen from the
body of work proposed. Includes a critical essay to describe the process,
objectives of the work created, justification, medium, and bibliography
of resources consulted for this project.

ETP 202 ILLUSTRATION
3 credits
Workshop: $15.00
A study of the problems faced by an illustrator and the processes and
elements used to solve them. The course comprises research, experimentation
and application of techniques and specific illustration methods.
ETP-205- VISUAL THINKING
3 credits
workshop: $15.00
Study of the phenomena of visual perception and the principles related
to color composition. It stresses the idea that the expressive content
of a work of art cannot be separated from its formal aspect. The course
examines the characteristics of perception, relying on works developed
during the workshop.
ETP-207 -MOSAIC
3 credits
workshop: $20.00
Study and workshop of the processes used in the creation of works of art
with the mosaic technique. Includes an analysis of mosaics through time.
ETP-208-STAINED-GLASS
3 credits
workshop: $20.00
Study and workshop of stained-glass technique. Includes an overview of
the history of this technique. Using theory of color, design and composition
students execute a pictorial work.
ETP-209-PERSPECTIVE
3 credits
workshop: $15.00
Introduction to perspective as a system of visual representation. The
course is based on exercises in which the student employs the theoretical
knowledge to create the illusion of a third dimension using various types
of perspective.
ETP 210 - INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIO PRACTICE

(Installation, conceptual art, and performance)
Through lectures and talks on the history of these genders, its historic
tradition, and cultural legacy, the various currents of contemporary art
are examined. The course endeavors to create a synthesis of processes,
actions and attitudes leading to a different means of communication and
esthetic approach.
ETP-211-ADVANCED STAINED-GLASS

Application and development of the techniques acquired in the previous
course, ETP 205 STAINED GLASS, which is a prerequisite.
ETP-212-DESIGN AND COMPOSITION
3 credits
workshop: $15.00
Topics discussed are the optical pyramid, the Golden Section, tonal, aerial
and linear perspectives in composition, positive and negative space, physical
probability, symmetry and asymmetry, and principles of design. Perspective
and space in modern painting will be studied, starting from Cubism.
ETP-217-SET DESIGN

Introduction the design of scenic space through sketches and models. Study
of the parts of a theater and how they work. Emphasizes interpretive design.
ETP 218 PAINTING OF THE HUMAN FIGURE
3 credits

The course stresses new approaches to the human body as object, subject
and artistic symbol. It focuses on the various ways of interpreting the
model as a pictorial element.
ETP- 304-PORTRAIT PAINTING
3 credits

Study and practice of the process of portraiture. The course emphasizes
the conceptual approach, design, composition and styles used over the
ages in the creation of a portrait.
ETP- 305-LARGE FORMAT PAINTING
3 credits
workshop: $15.00
Introduction to the processes of creating a large format work. Discussion
of concepts, technical processes, equipment and special materials required
by the genre. Includes the preparation of sketches and preliminary designs.
ETP-309-LANDSCAPE PAINTING
3 credits
workshop: $15.00
Study of form, composition, perspective, color and atmosphere, in terms
of the various types of landscapes: urban, rural, marine, and abstract.
ETP- 380 INTERNSHIP
up to a maximum of 6 credits
Offers the student the opportunity to acquire work experience in his or
her concentration while studying. In addition, it allows the student to
meet professionals in the field and establish professional ties that may
lead to employment opportunities on graduation. To be eligible students
should be in their third or fourth years of study with a GPA of 2.5 or
more.
ETP-390-SPECIAL SEMINAR

Open course allowing for a diversity of content, ranging from seminars
with visiting artists to study trips abroad.
